It's an interesting debate that came up when someone in one of our Datsun groups bought a mint 32k mile 280ZX.

He's going to LS swap it. Buuuut, it's automatic now. The debate is interesting though: should clean cars be swapped to reduce the amount of project work, or should originals be preserved and beaters be swapped?

Keep it original. If he wanted a sports car with a chevrolet motor, he should have got a corvette.

hmm. good question.

I say beaters are more of a candidate...

that said. if someone wanted to swap a cleaner car, by all means. unless if its something INSANELY clean (and I mean better then show room clean)

I think the best cars to swap are the ones that are mostly sound but with a bad engine.

If you start with a clean example of an uncommon car, you should at least do a really good job of it. I.E. the car should drive like it might have come from the factory that way.

Something original enough and fitting would probably be best.

I'm 1000000000000000% on the side of preserve the originals, swap the beaters. Save the good stock cars who want it stock. Don't mess up a good car when you can rescue a bad car. At the very minimum, a swap candidate should have a blown engine, salvage title, or some other attribute that makes it undesirable to those who want stock.

LS swap the world.

There is not a single front engine rear wheel drive vehicle that would not benefit greatly from the addition of an LS motor of some kind.

I lean towards preservation if it has rare options.

Otherwise LS ALL THE THINGS!

Swaps and heavy mods should be left to rough cars and non rare ones. Here in the Albuquerque Mustang community had a same debate when someone made a 10.5 Drag car out of a very rare Fox body Saleen SSC mustang.

I can see why you'd want to start with a clean car to do the swap and if it can be done in a way that allows it to be put back to standard(bolt in crossmembers/no sheet metal mods) then it doesn't really matter. In any case it's up to the owner what they do with it.

I think it should match up with the kind of car it is....like a vintage Japanese car with a SR, JZ, or a SR engine.

A clean, unmodified 240SX is always the perfect candidate for a swap...

As a former Datsun guy, I say swap it! It's an automatic, and the zx was a fat pig...

I would prefer to work with an original low mileage clean car for a swap. You could save thousands in bodywork and such and its probably way cheaper in the long run to start with a good car in the first place.

If it's something rare don't touch it but a 280Z is not the kind of rare I'm talking about.

How your friend is doing it is the best way. Take clean car, swap engine and trans and presto you are done. stick on some nice wheels and good brakes and you have one bitching car.

Haters are gonna hate no mater how you do it so may as well save yourself all the trouble of completely restoring a car that you won't ever be able to get your money back regardless.
